| One
thing that many young children and toddlers love is making drums.
They are quick to discover that the metal bowl that mom keeps
in the kitchen makes the perfect drum. Here is a way that you
and your child can make a silent drum, which will help your
child use their imagination and probably help you some too.
If you choose to you can make it so this drum can hang around
your child's neck. |
| Step
1: The very first thing that you need to do is something
that your child will not be able to help with but it shouldn't
take you very long, and that is cutting your oatmeal container.
If you want you can choose to do it before your toddler is with
you wanting to help out with the craft. |
|
| You'll
need to cut just a third of the container. If you have done
previous crafts that call for an oatmeal container you may already
have the piece you need. Be sure to keep the remaining part
of the oatmeal container for future crafts. |
| Step
2: For the top of your drum you will need to trace
around your cylinder. When it comes time to cut out the circle
you will have a guide that is the perfect size to fit on the
top of the drum. Your toddler or young child can definitely
help with the tracing. |
|
| This
can be a perfect time to talk about shapes with your toddler,
they'll be delighted that by tracing they are able to draw a
perfect circle. |
| Step
3: Cut out strips of construction paper to go around
the drum. Have your toddler choose the colors that they want
the drum to be. If they want to draw anything on the paper it
is a good idea to have them do that before you two glue or tape
it on to the drum. |
|
| Don't
worry if your strips are wider than the drum. Anything that
you have extra can easily be folded down and actually will make
gluing the top on easier. |

| Step
4: Take your scissors and carefully make a hole in
the side of the drum. Then make another hole on the other side
of drum across from the first hole. If you don't plan on attaching
a string to the drum then you can skip this step and go straight
on to putting the top on the drum. |
|
| Cut
a piece of string and tie the ends of it in the holes. The length
should comfortably fit your child so the drum hangs in front
of them. |
| Step
5: The next step is to glue or tape the top of the
drum on. If you had extra paper on the sides that you had to
fold down smear glue on to it and press the top on to it. If
you didn't have extra squirt glue around the edge of the top
of the oatmeal container and place the top on it. |
|
| Using
the glue is usually something that both toddlers and young children
enjoy so be sure to include them when ever a project calls for
it. |
| Step
6: The last step is optional but it can be very fun.
Cut out some random shapes of different colors for your child
to paste on to the drums side, or even top if that is what your
child wants. Again this is a great way that you can teach your
toddler different shapes. |
